Missing Out & Making It Happen
Not Getting Last Place & The Wheelrace

This week split the Atlanta Kazane Track Racing contingent into the A & B categories.
Stafford & I have our work cut out for us individually and can no longer work together.

Ace Speedway Crit Series Race #1
Traveled down to Alamance County, NC to race in the season opener of the Ace Speedway Race Series. Other than the threat of rain the weather was perfect. Our group of three (composed of myself, Steve Burtis, and Rick Woods) went into the Cat 4/5 race with no particular plan or strategy.
The race started out rather uneventfully. There was the usual surge and ebb I’ve come to expect in racetrack crits, and the few attacks were reeled in rather quickly. With the lap number slipping into the single digits the pace picked up. I was placed safely near the front of the pack on the outside line coming out of turn 2 when the rider in front and to my left decided to look over his shoulder. He drifted slightly up the track and then over corrected back to his original line. In the process of this maneuver his rear wheel came down into the front wheel of the rider behind him. There was no escaping the inevitable carnage that ensued. When I was able to look back, over half of the remaining field was either on the track or standing still. Coming around the 4/10 mile oval I notice a rider laying motionless and seemingly unconscious. My teammate Steve, who was himself a bit torn up, was by the man’s side. The race was neutralized for the next 40 minutes while fire and EMS tended to the injured. Steve turned out to be okay receiving mostly superficial scratches to his leg and arm. His kit and rear wheel were not as lucky. Taking advantage of the stoppage and my extra wheel, Steve was back on his bike and ready for the 5 lap shootout to determine the winner.
At the restart it quickly became apparent that nobody really wanted to take charge of the race. I decided to make a break for it with 1.5 laps to go. I got away solo, but did not get a gap big enough to sustain the remaining distance. I was gobbled up by four riders with .5 to go. I hung on for 5th place and almost managed to steal back 4th. Steve “Crash 5” Burtis made the final move finishing 3rd. Rick came in behind me for 6th.
